Data minimization is one of the most important principles your business can follow to not only respect user data, but comply with global privacy laws. It emphasizes the importance for organizations to collect and store only the necessary personal data that is directly relevant to the intended purpose. Once the collected personal data is no longer needed for the original, intended purpose, organizations are expected to either delete, purge, or de-identify the data to ensure it cannot be linked back to an individual. Yet many organizations are vastly over-retaining information, much of which contains personally identifiable information (PII), putting them at risk of data breaches and extreme regulatory fines.
